Permits

Permits are required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by adopted Madison County building codes, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the building commissioner and obtain the required permit.

Application for permits may be made online at MADISONCOUNTYTN.GOV. Please contact the Madison County Building Department if you need assistance.

Applications for grading permits on projects (1) one acre or larger and projects less than (1) acre that are part of a larger project shall be made to Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). Contact Madison County Building Commissioner before starting any site-work.

Please contact either Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT)Madison County Highway Department or the City of Three Way for drive-way permits for permits and/or regulations.


Before You Begin

Prior to any construction and/or land-disturbing activity contact the Madison County Building Department.

Some areas of the County have erosion and sediment control provisions which result in additional plans and permits. Other areas are within zones where geological studies may be needed.

Zoning/Land Use Information

Zoning/land use information may be obtained at the links provided below or by contacting the Madison County Planning Department.

The Planning Department is responsible for reviewing and advising Madison County on a wide array of issues such as the development of new subdivisions, shopping centers, and industries; the preservation of historic properties; and the location of new streets and roads to serve our growing community. The Planning Department has an extensive collection of maps that it updates and maintains for Jackson and Madison County. The Planning Department also maintains a large archive of subdivision plats for practically all subdivisions in Jackson and Madison County. In addition, the Planning Department works with various federal and state agencies such as the Census Bureau, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Tennessee Department of Transportation to facilitate federal and state projects and programs at the local level. Temporary Use

Temporary structures to include but not limited too; residential living quarters, non-residential structures, recreational vehicles and/or mobile office trailers shall be approved by the Madison County Building Commissioner.

Inspection Requests

All Inspection requests should be made by the permit holder or an authorized representative and can be requested by phone, in person or online to the Madison County Building Dept. at 731-423-6014. (Online link below) The request shall be turned in no later than 3:30 pm the day before the inspection is needed. It is the Homeowner and/or the Contractor's responsibility to assure that all inspections are requested and inspected at all proper phases during the construction process. ONLINE INSPECTION REQUEST
